Galatians 5

oooh... ahhhh... see this is what I mean about correlating passages in different sections of the bible. Just yesterday I had a sneaking suspicion that the whole divorcee/adultery speal piggybacked onto the verse about the law had something to do with the theme that comes up here in this chapter of Galatians.

There is something big in that whole divorced/adulterer/law thing, I can just smell it. If a man could legally divorce his wife under the law of Moses, then it would seem like Jesus is making the statement "even if you *could* keep the law as written... (which you can't but hypothetically speaking)... you would STILL not be "good enough". Because keeping the law was a set of standards, and they didn't make you perfect or righteous. If you are divorced and remarried (again, permissable by Mosaic law), then you are an adulterer. You still fall short.

Enter Galatians 5."We have freedom now, because Christ made us free. So stand strong. Do not change and go back into the slavery of the law. Listen, I paul tell you that if you go back to the law by being circumcised, Christ does you no good. Again, I warn every man: If you allow yourselves to be circumcised, you must follow all the law. If you try to be made right with God through the law , your life with Christ is over- you have left God's grace." vv 1-4

Wow, wow... WOW. This was so powerful for me.

"I wish that the people who are bothering you would castrate themselves!" v12 Sorry, this made me snicker. Paul wasn't one to mince words, I couldn't help imagining what that little statement would look like in modern terms.

I found it convicting how hating, being jealous, angry, selfish, provoking others, causing division and feeling envy are thrown in there with sexual fornication and witchcraft and worshipping idols in the list of things that prevent the doers of such as inheriting the kingdom of God. Rather frightful really. Until you remember that NOONE is going to inherit the kingdom of heaven based on his own keeping of the law... and that is what this chapter is all about.

Amazing. I loved it.
