Luke 21

I have always found this particular account (in all the gospels) hard to follow. I *think* that was is happening here is a mixed account of

1) things that were to happen in the lifetime of the people he was speaking to such as severe religious persecution (think gladiator) and the destruction of Jerusalem by Nero where the temple was taken down stone by stone despite the order NOT to, because the Roman Emperor KNEW there was a prophecy that that would happen and didn't want to fulfill the prophecy. But in the midst of the siege of Jerusalem the temple caught fire and all the gold melted and seeped down into the cracks of the foundation and in their greed the soldiers tore down the entire temple to get at the gold in the foundational stones.

2)the signs of the end the age... his second coming. The passages give me the sense of someone trying to recount a conversation with a lot of detail of things to come in the future without a *really* clear understanding of how to distinguish between what was coming SOON and what was coming later. I find verses 25-27 fascinating. They give me the picture of great Tsunami's and meteor showers and earthquakes and earthly turmoil that serves to lift our eyes up and watch for his appearance.

"nations will be afraid and confused because of teh roar and fury of the sea. People will be so afraid they will faint, wondering what is happening to the world..." this reminds me so much of the Tsunami in Indonesia.

"Be careful not to spend your time feasting, drinking , or worrying about worldly things. If you do, that day might come on you suddenly...." what an exhortation. One I have to constantly remind myself of. Don't get so caught up in the trappings of this world that I am not living in anticipation and hope of the next.
