Jeremiah 47

Wow. That was a little jarring. Sober wake up call for this first morn of 2010. At first I was left a little deflated and disappointed. But then as I started to ask myself the questions that always prompt me to really apply the passage I realized that this of course is as fitting and important as any other account in scripture. "What does this passage tell me about God?" Is one of the first questions I always ask.

Well... this passage tells me that God is sovereign.... He did not only rule Judah, He was actively controlling, judging, ruling over ALL nations and bringing them into His plan His way, in His timing.

It tells me that God has high demands and when we don't pay attention He WILL get our attention, somehow. If it means raking us over the coals to burn our feet and give us a wake up call, or dumping us into the deep end to let us flounder and call out to Him, so be it.

It tells me that God doesn't sweep anything under the carpet. It's like the verse we read at the close of chapter 46, that I keep going back to with my own children, "I will punish you fairly, but I will not let you escape your punishment."

Sobering for the one who is not walking in submission to the Lord's direction. But worship inducing for the one who is. Our God reigns!!!!! Hallelujah.

As you posted on your main blog, you have a word for your year (love this idea!). I was just reading 'Becoming a Praying Parent' and the author has another neat idea that I thought I would pass on.

"So once a year, when we went to the beach for our family vacation, I used those cherished early morning hours before anyone else was up to spend time with God making a master prayer list. I would sit and gaze out over the ocean, pencil and paper in hand, and ask God to show me how to pray for each child over the next twelve months. After all, He was the only one who truly knew what each child needed and what challenges they would face in the future. The Bible says, "The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him" (Psalm 25:14). He reveals things to us when we ask. God always met me there with good instructions, and I came home with prayer lists for each of my children. Then, throughout the year, I added to them whenever I needed to do so. I kept many of those lists, and as I look back at them now and see all the answers to my prayers, I'm overcome with the faithfulness of God to work in the lives of our children when we pray."
