Nehemiah 5

"Nehemiah told the rich Jews to stop charging interest on their loans to their needy bothers. God never intended people to profit from others' misfortune. In contrast to the values of this world, God says that caring for one another is more important than personal gain. When a Christian brother or sister suffers, we all suffer. We should help needy believers, not exploit them. The Jerusalem church was praised for working together to eliminate poverty. Remember, "Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing" (Proverbs 28:27). Make it practice to help those in need around you."

I was so amazed by Nehemiah in this passage. If you think of him as a modern day politician (for that's what he was at this stage in his life, as governor) speaking this way, it really blows your socks off. He was in a position of influence, power and wealth and he used it for great good and kept himself humble and was truly a civil servant in the best sense of the term. I LOVED it.

Just love that Nehemiah. He impresses me at every chapter for all the reasons Denise and PC mentioned. He is an inspiration for anyone in a position of wealth or power or just living in community.

Read it and was thinking how awful those nobles where being but how harsh can we be to our harder up brothers and sisters. Such a good chapter, speaking directly to our time!
