v17 "And Elisha prayed, 'O Lord, open his eyes so he may see. ' Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes and he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. "

I always love this part and cannnot wait until I have eyes to see such things. The glory of God that I am able to see right now is amazing but I am sure that I will be speechless and humbled when one day I will have eyes for the spiritual world.

I had to wonder, why did he strike everyone blind? Were the chariots not there to fight but rather to give spiritual power or....? I do love the peaceful ending and the fact that the Arameans stopped raiding Israel's territory.

Cannot go to the famine...such desperation is beyond my imagination. It is so hard to understand such things.

"If the Lord doesn't help you, how can I?" v27

What truth in these words. Unless the Lord builds the house the labourers labour in vain. Unless the Lord is on our side all our strivings are for nought. Unless the Lord has His sovreign way with us, we will never be fulfilled and at peace. Only in Him can we find our help, our strength, grace, peace and hope. Apart from him there is no true gain and even what we count as gain will prove to be loss in the face of knowing Christ and the power of His resurrection at work in our lives.

Oh Lord, to live fully in that knowledge today. To walk in those steps that were laid down on the path to Calvary. Steps that seek not to attain position for oneself, but to lay it down, to pay it all forward, out of love for others and love for you.

I thought he struck them blind so that he could lead them into the city walls without them realizing. Basically when their eyes were opened they would have thought "we're done for! We're inside the city walls with no means of escape!" But then Israel was urged by God to show GRACE and it was through the act of grace that the Arameans, humbled, went home and fought no more.

I guess my thoughts are that if Israel would have killed all those soldiers, then the war would have continued, right? Because the king of Aramea would most likely have retaliated. But through this wise act of grace fighting ceased and peace reigned.
