Numbers 17

I have discovered a new little trick. In the side margin of my bible, underneath the devotional thought for that chapter, there is a little thematical list that bullet marks some of the main themes of the chapter. After reading and pondering the passage I can take a look at the main themes and ask myself how I relate to them personally. Today the themes were rebellion and submission to authority.
That really brings things home for me.

What is my attitude towards those that God has put in the place to shepherd me spiritually? Am I fully submitted to their leadership? Am I honoring and respectful of their God given role or am I critical and distrusting? Am I willing to submit to THEIR ways even if their ways aren't MY way? (sound familiar, this reminds me of marital submission as well).

The truth is that I have LONG been one to resist submission like a cat resists water. Having grown up in a very disfunctional environment steeped in hypocrisy and false fronts I tend to be very judgemental and exacting.

God has been gently freeing me of these ugly bonds in recent years but I still have a long way to go and I recognize that.

"After witnessing spectacular miracles, seeing the Egyptians punished by the plagues, and experiencing the actual presence of God, the Israelites still complained and rebelled. We wonder how they could be so blind and ignorant, and yet we often repeat this same pattern. We have centuries of evidence, the Bible in many translations, and the convincing results of archaeological and historical studies. But people today continue to disobey God and go their own way. Like the Israelites, we are more concerned about our physical condition than our spiritual condition. We can escape this pattern only by paying attention to all the signs of God's presence that we have been given. Has God guided and protected you? Has he answered your prayers? Do you know people who have experienced remarkable blessings and healings? Do you know Bible stories about the way God has led his people? Focus your thoughts on what God has done, and rebellion will become unthinkable."

Admittedly not deep but I am greatly relieved that God can make a staff bud, blossom and produce almonds overnight. We are starting to look for such a miracle this farming season. He has tended faithfully to our crops over and over and I praise Him for His provision. Prayin' for no frost and resting in His peace.
