Job 1

Then he bowed down to the ground to worship God. He said; "The Lord gave these things to me, and He has taken them away. Praise the name of the Lord." In all this Job did not sin or blame God. v20-22

A continuation of the truth I gleaned from yesterday's reading for me. Job really had that truth tucked nicely under his belt.

Job recognized that he served a sovereign God and proved his faith in that regardless of his circumstances. He trusted that althought his world appeared to be spinning out of control God was still seated firmly on His throne. I too must learn to rest on this assurance that no matter what my circumstances in life I should learn to say as Job said blessed be the name of the Lord.

Listening to this song while doing my morning chores, continues to hammer home this message of praising God in the storm;

"I was sure by now,God,
that You would have reached down
and wiped our tears away,
stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen
and it's still raining
as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain,
"I'm with you"
and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away.

Chorus:
And I'll praise you in this storm
and I will lift my hands
for You are who You are
no matter where I am
and every tear I've cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to You
and raised me up again
my strength is almost gone how can I carry on
if I can't find You
and as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away

Chorus

I lift my eyes onto the hills
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth

CASTING CROWNS, PRAISE YOU IN THE STORM

That's a favorite song of mine too.

Job astounds me... his reaction is not a sudden holy response out of nowhere.

Job has continually seen the gracious hand of God upon his family and has been conciously thankful to God for all of his daily provisions. Even when his children are partying, Job continues to make sacrifices, even on their behalf, always choosing to honor God because of His great name and sovereignty.

When all of a sudden everything is taken away, he knows that his God has not changed in character, that He is still in power and must have purpose as well.

I want to be a Job. That said, I don't really want everything taken away in order to prove it... but I do want to keep fostering that underlying security in a loving, all-knowing God.

I was reminded by the conversation between God and Satan in vs. 12 that God is fully aware of every attempt by Satan to bring suffering and difficulty upon us. While God may allow us to suffer for a reason beyond our understanding, He is never caught by surprise by our troubles and is always compassionate.
