"the only way to remove the sin of killing an innocent man is for the murderer to be put to death." v33

This, along with something we sang in a song on Sunday brought back the deep reality of the crucifixion that was revealed to me in a sermon I listened to last year in the "Christ on the Cross" series. The song we sang said "he had no thought for his own grief, but shed drops of sweat for mine". I don't think that's quite right. Yes, he went to the cross out of love for us but when he wept in the garden it was for the "cup" that he was to drink, the cup that bore the full wrath of God because in going to the cross, in taking on our sins He was taking on the full wrath of God. He BECAME sin for us. (2 Cor 5:21). Do we understand what that means? He BECAME guilty of all of our sins. All of them. The most heinous and horrific. In the case of this verse, he BECAME a murderer and the only way for those sins to be removed was through death. It's heart wrenching life altering reality here. To realize what it really means that He paid the price. THAT is the gospel.
