Deuteronomy 18

kind of a difficult test of a prophet, no? because sometimes what they were prophesying about would not take place in their lifetime. Maybe this is referring to more immediate prophesies?

I've thought that too... that you could believe a prophet for a long time before finding out he/she was a fake... such as the whole 'world ending in 2012 thing' (except for the promise we have that none except the Father will know the exact time Jesus will return)
Another way to decide on a godly prophet is on the prophecy itself... does it reflect something that would logically come from the God we know from scripture? However, while saying that, I'm reminded of some pretty crazy prophecies that seem a little unlike anything God had done previously... more insights, anyone?

"The Lord hates anyone who does these things." v12

This really disturbed me this morning. We have this image of God JUST being LOVE no matter what we are. And He is. But we have trouble understanding is that God can BE love, and still hate. That He is merciful but He is also just. And He does not abandon one virtue in favor of the other. He is equally and totally each virtue that He is represented as in scripture. I had never considered this until it came up recently in our small group reading from the Daily Discipler and I think it is a very important concept for us to understand in order to have a right view of ourselves and God.

I did a word study on this word "hates" this morning and here is what I got;

to'ebah

properly something disgusting (morally), that is an abhorrence; especially idolatry or (concretely) an idol: abominable.

It is hard to grasp how God is capable of loving mankind as His creation, while abhorring the sinful, fallen creature he has become, and the sins that we still succumb to even as redeemed creatures. Hating the sin, but loving the sinner.

I liked how the LAB compared the priests and Levites in vs. 1-8 to our Pastors today. "As you look at your own church in light of God's Word, what ways do you see to honor the leaders God has given you?" Something for us all to think about.

I also like how this came up just in the month that Women in Touch would like us to honor our Pastor's wives.

It is SO great to see you all here! I have been thinking about getting back into the Word and a beautiful message from a wonderful friend encouraged me to make the leap from "thinking" to "doing".
