How depressing life can be without the hope of eternal salvation! Solomon sure could have used a glimmer of Jesus!

as usual, lots in this chapter. I think what I'm getting from here is mirrored in what we're reading in Job - it may look like evil is rewarded, but both good people and evil people are in God's hand.
Also, not to be concerned with the fact that it seems that evil is rewarded, but to just focus on our own lives - to work to the best of our abilities and to enjoy what God has given to us (work, spouse, family, etc)

I agree Chris, life is depressing without that hope. I saw a clip from a program coming up on CBC - David Suzuki's last lecture - he says something about how everything dies, and I just thought - I wonder how he views death in light of all he thinks he knows? Does he sit there now and wonder what the point was?
Interesting.

"Enjoy all the useless days of this useless life God has given you here on earth, because it is all you have." v9

So much in this chapter is geared toward "making the most of this, because it's all there is after all" and I think David Suzuki would completely agree with this philosophy. Problem is, it is not a biblical worldview to have.

I get the feeling that Solomon was trying to force himself out of a depression and when you're doing that you try to tell yourself stuff like this. It's a job to just be able to make peace with your day and find joy in anything.

But when you are walking in the Spirit you realize there is SO MUCH MORE than just getting through or finding joy in the day.

"Whatever work you do, do your best, because you are going to the grave, where there is no working or planning, no knowledge and no wisdom." v10

Wrong! This life is just a prologue, we are called to invest in eternity. That is where ALL the knowledge and wisdom lay! This is all just a shadow. "All that is done on earth shall pass, only what's done for Christ will last."
