I love that Hezekiah chose to let God answer the scorns from Sennacherib. I'im sure that would not have been easy to do, with all of his Generals and Commanders waiting for his orders to annihilate the enemy. What a dramatic victory! And yet, Hezekiah was not immune to the pride that comes from taking our eyes off of the source of our power.

Psalm 25
I'm here to meet with you
Come and meet with me
I'm here to find You
Reveal Yourself to me

As I wait You make me strong
As I long, draw me to your arms
As I stand and sing your praise
You come, you come and you fill this place
Won't you come, Won't you come and fill this place

such a great psalm for me to read after preparing the kids club lesson yesterday on trust and trials. I love Psalms. How blessed we are to have God's words and wisdom at our fingertips. May we burn it on our minds and impress it upon our hearts and hunger and thirst for deeper communion with Him in 2012!

Isaiah 29:
"Because this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote..." (v13)

I've always thought that the traditions in the liturgical churches were so very beautiful and added so much meaning to their worship BECAUSE of the tradition behind it all. But I guess like anything, when you grow up in it sometimes the meaning is lost and the heart is not involved.
I think traditional things can be very beautiful and meaningful, as long as our heart is in them and they are directing us closer to God. No?

yep. there are so many things like that. for me I grew up practicing communion every Sunday (Pietro, too) and it was very meaningful and central to our worship service, it was hard for us to switch over to having it only 4 times a year or less if you happened to miss a service where communion was served. But I can see how it can become rote for people and lose its "specialness" when it is done week after week. It is what you make it. Same for devotions. You can read the Bible daily just out of "tradition"... not good. Or you can read the Bible daily with a daily desire to "meet" God, hear from Him and respond. So many examples of how we can fall into tradition and lose the heart of what we are doing. For me the biggest thing is going to church but not really expecting to hear from God. I hate that. Now every week I have been praying to hear from Him, even if it is just three words that apply to me, that I will hear them, receive them, and take them away to apply them in my life. And He has been faithful to minister to me there.

When I read Jonah 2, it struck me how intimately God is involved in Jonah's (and each of our) lives. I got the mental picture of Jonah inside the fish and God watching... waiting.... and as soon as Jonah prays, he is delivered (vomited) from it.
Last week, in Jonah 1, PC made the comment "And yet the heart of God is one of grace and love, and pursuit." referring to the Ninevites. Here we see the same attitude to Jonah. I thought that was kind of cool.
BTW... it says a big fish... have we just always assumed it was a whale?

Jonah 2:8-10 "People who worship useless idols give up their loyalty to you. But I will praise and thank you while I give sacrifices to you, and I will keep my promises to you. Salvation comes from the Lord!" Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and the fish threw up Jonah onto the dry land."

Wake up call :)

Oh Lord, flesh out the idols in my life. The things that distract me from worshiping and serving you with devotion and fervor. Give me eyes to see them for what they are, things that I turn to when I should be turning to you. Things that rob you of the glory you are due in my life.

What do you think would have happened to Jonah if God had allowed him to keep running?
LAB says "When you know God wants you to do something, don't run. God may not stop you as he did Jonah." Thought for the day.
