Exodus 13

..."God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was the shortest way. God said, "If they have to fight, they might change their minds and go back to Egypt." So God led them through the desert toward the Red Sea." V17-18

Sometimes (often?) we find ourselves being led on the "longer route". Our place is to trust and yield, understanding that the quickest and easiest path in the short run isn't always best in the long. Those round about treks produce in us patience, perseverance, trust, faith, hope, and submission. And really, after all, those are signposts that mark our approach to our final destination.

lol - that was the part that struck me too :) I thought, isn't it ironic that here God is trying to make things easier for them, and yet when they reach the Red Sea they STILL throw up their hands as if all is lost and God is leading them astray.
And my aren't we still like that. Because we don't see or know the "big" picture, and b/c we have no idea what God's intentions are, we get frustrated and prone to thinking that He doesn't have our best in mind - when in fact He ALWAYS has our best in mind.
Why is it always so hard for us to trust?
