The whole time I'm reading this I'm picturing scenes from "Kingdom of Heaven" and wondering if battle wasn't a little like that? Obviously from an earlier era, but the concept was probably the same. Saul was out to conquer and to establish his kingdom, just like any other leader or king.
But can you imagine Jonathan going off by himself and slaughtering 20 men in about half an acre of land? Wow. How amazing his faith that God would give him that victory.
I was also thinking, how foolish Saul's oath was. here he is in battle, and he has forbidden ANYONE to eat a thing. SO all day long they are supposed to fight and battle with no food to sustain them. Idiot.

Yes, idiot about sums it up. I love this chapter, it shows how the meek inherit the land. Saul sitting there with Ahijah who was wearing the holy vest, there they are, supposed to be waiting for Samuel and the word of the Lord, but Saul decides once again that he must "save the moment" and take matters into his own hands. The whole fasting thing I think was his personal "challenge" to God. Here, we'll fast for you, you give us the victory. Whatever! Classic case of how God desires obedience and not sacrifice.

Then there is Jonathan. I love that man. Him discussing matters with his armor bearer, someone of no repute and his heart stoic in the fact that "The Lord can give us victory if we have many people or just a few." Oh how I love it!

How far from grace Saul has fallen, how desperate and sad his at once controlling and out of control behavior.
