all right. some things are just gross...like traipsing around camp with someone's head hanging from your hand. ewwww.

sorry. what actually struck me, before that part, was in v28. after David says "who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God", his brother reacts in an interesting way and rebukes David, accusing him of neglecting the sheep just to get his thrills checking out the battle.

isn't lashing out always our first instinct when we're being told we're doing something wrong? David was basically saying that those guys shouldn't be such cowards when they are a part of God's army, and no one can therefore stand against them. His brother lashes out at him defensively, just like we often do when confronted with something we're doing wrong or not doing at all but should be doing.

I also love David's response to Goliath - "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel..."

this verse immediately came to mind: "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright" (Ps 20:7-8)

I wonder if David wrote that after he defeated Goliath.

Oh my goodness! The SAME verse came to mind when I read that about "some trust in horses...." and I also felt totally convicted about getting all self defensive when I read the brother's reaction. I also liked how David didn't waste time worrying about "equipping" himself. Actually he found all the trappings to be totally distracting and burdening... he picked up a couple stones and stepped forward in faith. Sometimes I think in our spiritual lives we get so bogged down with thinking we are not "properly equipped" that we don't make a move in faith and watch how God will slay our giants "phobia's" in the area of spiritual growth, battle and ministry.
