Acts 15

had great discussion in our house this morning about this passage, the whole "tell them to refrain from eating meat sacrificed to idols" part and what that was all about when Paul says somewhere else (Romans 14/15 came into it but I know there is another passage as well where he talks about it) saying that idols are nothing, therefore the meat sacrificed to idols is edible. And not to judge one another based on this "conscience" issue.

We came to two possible conclusions. I thought maybe they were making this stipulation to set the people apart from their pagan culture, and more to keep them protected from the idolotry aspect than actually being contaminated by "bad" meat. Prairie Guy thought that it was urged in order to be sensitive and not conscious of the offense it would cause to many who DID find eating this meat to be an offense (again Romans 14/15)

So we talked alot about conscience issues, and something comparible in our culture and what came up was the local decision of a church to urge refraining from alcohol, and where that stemmed from and why they thought it was important. It doesn't make drinking alcohol a sin, but when you are dealing with a weakness on the part of some, and wanting to make wise choices that will set a good example and keep as many from stumbling as possible, then sometimes it is in the best interestes of all to just "refrain".

Anyway. Great discussion stemming from this. Love it.

Understanding conscience issues is vital to loving our brothers. I remember an elder in the faith preaching at me about holding on to my own freedoms and not being bound by man's restrictions. "If they believe it is a sin then it is to them but don't you be bound!" and in the next breath being worked up about stumbling others... I have spent many years trying to understand how it all works.

Christ was all about selflessness so I figure I need to base each conscience issue on selflessness... what is best for others watching me? Freedom in Christ is to LOVE and to base my life on that.

I often encourage my kids to use discernment in their lives and not rules. In each situation I will say something such as 'what is more important, the Lego ship or your brother?' It often comes into perspective then...

My freedom to drink alcohol is not as important as a struggling brother and if I offend the brother how can I be used to encourage and lead him to more freedom in his walk later??

Isn't it great to have a house hold who loves to talk it out about stuff like this? I appreciate my man so much for that!
