ugh. Ugh, ugh... ugh.

"It's impossible to pa sthrough life without experiencing times when you cannot see your way through a deep valley. Times when the package delivered at the back door comes delivered in the ugly wrapping of death or affliction or illness or even divorce. "Pleasure is nothing else but the intermission of pain." You may find yourself enjoying hte intermission. Today, you may be smiling. Your heart may be light and merry. Perhaps answers to prayer have come beautifully and deliberately. You are swept away in delight. But it's also quite possible that you are caught in the grip of affliction. You may be going through some fo the hardest days of your life.

When you persevere through a trial, God gives you a special measure of insight. You become the recipient of the favor of God as He gives to you something that would not be learned otherwise."

From Wisdom for the Way by Charles Swindoll.

I was very struck by that "you become the recipient of the favor of God"....

Whoa. And woe. Can we safely assume this Ishmael may have some unresolved issues in his past? Maybe he needed a daddy who loved him? Wow. He was one bad dude.

I'm not sure what to think about that phrase "pleasure is nothing else but the intermission of pain". I understand the beauty of the last bit, and even the head knowledge of how the first bit works. But to believe that pleasure is just the rest between afflictions? Hmmm....

it's interesting that this came up today, I have been reflecting on it for a couple of days, let's see if I can put my thoughts into words.

So, I guess it has to do with worldview. The truth of the matter is that no matter how we *view* life, (surely God wants us to make the most, to be joyful, hopeful, happy despite our circumstances) we cannot lose sight of the reality that our circumstances are what they are.

We live in a fallen world, where every day the thief seeks to rob, kill and destroy glory that is due to God. While living in joy and hope we can't lose sight of the fact that this is not Eden. This is not paradise, this is not the perfect plan that God had in mind, and anything less.... really.... well... it's affliction. If you think of it through Adam and Eve's eyes.

So I do believe the quote holds a profound truth when you think of it in that light.

I guess all the more glory due to God that we can live with the fruits of the Spirit in such a world. If this idea of a fallen world full of ill wasn't true we wouldn't be a shining light for God's glory. In the darkness the candle does shine all the brighter.

I must admit I read this chapter last week... after Gedaliah didn't believe the report against Ishmael I had to see what the case was and read on... so I am again surprised by the turn of events... guess I didn't suspect it either. Heavy... So much of Jeremiah is heavy and I can't say the world is any different today.
