"Second Chronicles focuses on the proper and improper worship of God as symbolized by the Jerusalem Temple. David planned the Temple; Solomon built it and then put on the greatest dedication service the world has ever seen. Worship in the Temple was superbly organized.

But several evil kings defiled the Temple and degraded worship so that the people revered idols more highly than God. Finally, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed the Temple. The kings were gone, the Temple was destroyed, and the people were removed. The nation was stripped to its very foundation. But fortunately there was a greater foundation - God himself. When everything in life seems stipped away from us, we, too, still have God - his Word, his presence, and his promises."

"the priests and the people of Judah became more wicked, following the evil example of the other nations. the Lord had made the Temple in Jerusalem holy, but the leaders made it unholy." v14

Again, totally tying in with the theme I have been getting from our OT readings this last quarter. "I have redeemed you, act like it. Don't defile what I have consecrated." When I think of my life as being consecrated by the Lord it is very sobering. Am I choosing to live up to that fiery pure consecration? Or am I wallowing in the tepid, muddied waters of earthly mediocrity.

"... (they) hated God's messages." v16

How frightening that we have come full circle and now many who claim to be redeemed by God also hate His message, and refuse to listen or submit to it and worse yet, try to convince themselves and others that God doesn't really say what He has said at all. Twisting the scriptures to conform to their own lusts and desires.

As heavy as this all is to read I am always moved by the end of the chapter. The whole concept of the land getting a break. I could picture the peace it finally got after years under sin, I could almost hear it breath a sigh... I am also so impressed that if the chosen reject God then he WILL and DID use the gentiles and in this case a king!
