"and they made the Lord, the God of Israel, angry because fo their worthless idols." v13

"The Israelites made the Lord, the God of Israel, very angry because they worshipped worthless idols." v26

I think what we so often forget is that the Israelites didn't turn their backs on God in so many of these instances. They were going to the temple, making their "sacrifices", calling out to Him, believing in His existence and the reality of His great acts.

But they had let so much other stuff creep in that their attentions were divided. We see their idols so clearly because they are given "names". They are "persons". Asherah, Baal... Molech.

What we don't see is that we devote ourselves just as scatterdly and tithe more time to our own "idolatrous" pursuits (even if we cushion them with good excuses, they are good pursuits, we can use these pursuits to be effective for God) that don't have names but are very real , things that end up crowding God right off the throne.

I am becoming more and more conscious of the idols in my life. It's a scary thing to be aware of, it's like walking around in a bit of a spiritual stupor and being conscious of what is going on behind the veil. It frightens me, it's one of those "deeper" places that when you start to become aware of it you say "but I don't want to go down there!" because it's somewhere God calls you to go by faith, with only the comfort of His voice, but not much comfort of a crowd of people around you who "get it" and are surging in the same direction.

The rebuilding of Jericho at the end, and the death of the sons because of it was horrible to hear.
