Had to do some background reading on Nahum to get a good picture of what was going on here. Thought I'd share.

Nineveh, capital city of the Assyrian empire, is located in the modern city of Mosul, Iraq. Occupied first in the 7th millennium BC, it became important to Mesopotamia when Sennacherib (704-681 BC) made it his capital. It was sacked by the Medes and Babylonians in 612 BC. Wiki answers

"Remember the playground bully? He was big and tough and he enjoyed pushing kids around. Everyone was afraid of him (even some of the teachers you thought)- he seemed invincible. but over the next few years, the other boys grew past him- bigger, stronger, faster. then the buly didn't seem so tough or frightening as before.

Assyria was the bully of the Middle east, the conqueror of many nations including Israel. This nation's power, epitomized by Nineveh, the capital city, was awesome and overwhelming. Proud and defiant, Assyria plundered, oppressed and slaughtered its victims. Enter Nahum the prophet.

Nahum pronounced God's judgement upon this prideful and wicked people, exclaiming that powerful Asyria would be utterly destroyed. His prediction was fulfilled within fifty years.

This book provides strong testimony of god's ultimate power and justice- he calls all people to live under his rule: nations, cities, parents, neighborhood bullies... and you."

Found you! Thanks for the background re: Ninevah. A good reminder of how God hates evil and how he does not leave it unpunished. A good balance to His beautiful gospel of grace. The imagery of the chapter makes me shudder though. Judith
