"First I prayed to the God of heaven. Then I answered the king," v4v-5a

This is my current learning curve. To learn to shut my trap first, talk to God FIRST, listen to God FIRST and then, if he gives me the go ahead, and cautiously seeking to exercise all the fruits of the Holy Spirit, THEN speak.

I'm such a talker. This will be a big learning curve!

"So the King gave me the letters because God was showing kindnes to me." v8

I love this verse. People don't show kindness to us, God shows kindness to us through people. Any good we see in others, any good we experience from others is not a result of their own GOODNESS but a result of God's goodness at play through them. This is a profound truth, because God sometimes chooses to display His goodness through people who are not even subject to him in their own hearts and minds. This makes me just stand in awe and feel hollow and small before God's sovreignty and power. It's all out of our hands. God is at work not only behind the scenes but at the very core of our every earthly step. And the way He can turn all situations to allign with His eternal plan is one of those mysteries that boggles the mind and shakes the soul.

Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem always remind me of three little demons from The Screwtape Letters. Need to re-read that!

The pray first, speak after theme came out to me also. I must say that I really like Nehemiah-- transparent (v2...I was very much afraid)and prayerful (v4)and refined (I just like the way he phrases things) and driven by a purpose (v17). I think that the way the book is written in the 1st person really makes his character seem more apparent.
