Psalm 82

"I said, 'you are "gods." You are all sons of God Most High.' But you will die like any other person; you will fall like all the leaders." v6-7

One of the most spiritually awakening books I have ever read is called "Destined for the Throne" by Paul E. Billheimer. Revolutionary read. Indeed, God has given us the authority of "gods", the power and rights and blessings and arsenal of the Most High is laid at our feet and we are invited to reign with Christ. And yet here we sit "making mud pies" as C.S. Lewis remarks. We were destined to not just SERVE the Lord, but to RULE with Christ. and yet as verse 5 says "You know nothing. You don't understand. You walk in the dark, while the world is falling apart."

That verse just shook me to my very core. It is so true. I know NOTHING. And my desire to know is so weak, so flickering compared to the raging fire of desire that I SHOULD have for the things of my Lord. Oh what a wretched being am I! Oh how truth cuts to the core, dividing the marrow from the bone... showing us up for what we really are.

Today I have a passionate hunger to start living up to my potential in Christ (because indeed it is only in Christ that any of this is even possible). To empty myself of myself, to come to the well and be filled with his knowledge and goodness and mercy and strength as the waters fill the sea. More of him, less of me. To experience His power at work in me, teaching and training me in righteousness, equipping me to reign with Christ. What a privilege beyond grasping is ours. What grace.

Hmmm...my study bible says 'rulers and judges in the ancient Near East, as deputies of the heavenly King, could be given the honorific title "god" or be called a "son of god"

Also says " the psalm is a word of judgenment on unjust rulers and judges....it calls to account those responsible for defending the weak and oppressed on earth." I must admit that I have never really considered defending the weak and oppressed to be the work of our governments (rulers)although they do this through various programs...and certainly never really considered it in the light of biblical times of constant war and upheaval. God has a heart for those that we easily walk by. They are not missed by sharp eyes. I find this call for justice and attention to those who are in a disadvantaged state to be an encouragement to me. And I just love that our mighty God cares for every last one of us.

Amen PC!!!

"Righteousness, justice, love, and truth are the foundation of God's throne; they are central characteristics of the way God rules. They summarize his character. As God's ambassadors, we should exhibit the same traits when we deal with people. Make sure your actions flow out of righteousness, justice, love and faithfulness, because any unfair, unloving, or dishonest action cannot come from God.

David is promised to have God's power to accomplish God's will. Without God's help, we are weak and powerless, inadequate for even the simplest spiritual tasks. But when we are filled with God's Spirit, his power flows through us and our accomplishments will exceed our expectations."

PC, just wanted you to know that I was writing at the same time as you and my comment was not written to refute yours. I had not seen yours before submmitting mine. I find it interesting how two or three people can look at a verse and all have different thoughts as they processs the word.

no worries! I didn't take it as a refutation at all... and the part about the different perspectives is what I LOVE about true fellowship. Share on!
