They dynamics of the "holy thing" not making other things holy by touching it, but the "unholy" thing contaminating what it comes in contact with is disturbing.

"This is also true for the people of this nation. They are unclean, and everything they do with their hands is unclean to me. Whatever they offer at the altar is also unclean." v14

An understanding of worship is vital here. Worship is submitting to God out of reverence. If we go through the motions (church, tithe, daily devotions) while inside we are not really surrendered and submitted to God's work in our lives and His discipline and guidance, then we are not "worshipping".

As such even our acts of "devotion" and service will be sullied because our heart is not in it. All God has ever wanted was our hearts. The rest of our lives will follow. But if our hearts are weighed down by the cares of this world, all else in our lives will be dragged down into the gutter with it.

2:4
"Be strong...now get to work, for I am with you." Judah's people had returned to worshiping God, and God had promised to bless their efforts. But it was time for them to WORK. We must be people of prayer, bible study, and worship, but eventually we must get out and DO the work God has prepared for us. He wants to change the world through us, his ambassadors. God has given you a job to do in the church, at your place of employment, and at home. The time has come to take courage and get going because God is with you!"

I was so encouraged reading this this morning! After listening to Mark Driscoll's sermon on being a biblical wife and mother and vacillating between feeling absolutely depressed because I fall soooo short and being inspired to action...well these notes on the bible reading this morning was an encouragement!

2: 10-19
"The point of this message is that holiness will not rub off on others, but contamination will. As the people began to obey God, God promised to encourage and prosper them. But they needed to understand that activities in the Temple would not clean up their sin; only repentance and obedience could do that. If we insist on harboring wrong attitudes and sins or on maintaining close relationships with sinful people, we will be defiled. Holy living will come only when we are empowered by God's Holy Spirit."

2:14
"When a child eats spaghetti sauce, very soon his or her face, hands, and clothes become red. Sin and selfish attitudes produce the same result - they stain everything they touch. Even good deeds done for God can be tainted by sinful attitudes. The only remedy is God's cleansing."

I didn't see the comparison when I read this but I really really appreciate both of your comments today and gave me much to think about.

Sullied devotions... such a striking thought!

I have known it is a truth for so long that the act is nothing and I need to get myself straight and not expect the act to set me straight alone... it is a heart thing...

OH SO OFTEN I have felt it is WRONG to fake it and put on a show at church and so I don't go because I don't feel safe being myself... and yet that is a place where I should be encouraged to set it straight and begin again trying to live a worshipful life... does that make sense?

bits of v16-19When Ianyone went to a wine vat to draw 50 measures there were only 20. I struck all the work of you hand with blight....Until tnow, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive have not borne fruit. From this day on I will bless you. "

Interesting to contemplate God's punishments and wonder if he is using any of these to catch my attention today. If he is usign it elsewhere to catch others attention....

Nise, I loved your enthusiasm here! Keep it moving forward into a new week, girl!

Becky, your sharing just gripped me. I hear you. Sometimes we really do have a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater and it is so hard to keep a steady keel while trying to trim our sails isn't it?
