He spoke to the angel who was destroying the people. He said. "That is enough! do not kill any more people!" vs-15

God saw the angel killing the people, He knew David had to be punished in some way, this verse helps me to understand that no matter what we do God will still love us.

"Satan was against Israel and he caused David to count the people of Israel." v1

Those words "Satan was against..." and "he caused." really stuck with me today. Of course it doesn't take the onus off of us for our sins but it does give one pause for thought. Satan knows our areas of weakness, he will harness his powers to hit us where it hurts and bring our feet out from under us.
I also couldn't help but notice In verse 8, unlike Adam and Eve in the garden, David didn't waste anytime pointing fingers and assigning blame.

"*I* have sinned greatly by what *I* have done! Now I beg you to forgive *me* because *I* have been very foolish".

When we do succumb to temptation and screw things up, we have only ourselves to blame. We can't blame Satan for dangling the carrot before us. We can only blame ourselves for not turning away and keeping our eyes focused on the prize... fellowship with God.

One other thing that struck me, that I had to wait and do a word study on was verse 15 that Ellie quoted this morning. My translation reads;

"God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but when the angel started to destroy it, the Lord saw it and felt very sorry about the terrible things that happened. So he said to the angel who was destroying, "That is enough! Put down your arm!"

in light of the comments on "pity" from yesterday, this struck me as the Lord... well... showing pity. I went to look at the Hebrew and sure enough the word in question (translated repented of or was sorry) is "nacham" and it means;

to be sorry, that is, (in a favorable sense) to pity, console or (reflexively) rue; or (unfavorably) to avenge (oneself): - comfort (self), ease [one’s self], repent).

Still mulling over all that, but thought I would share my present thoughts anyway.

"And David said to God,"I am the one who called for the census!I am the one who sinned and done wrong!But these people are innocent-what have they done?O LORD my God,let your anger fall against me and my family, but do not destroy your people."v 17

When God was about to destroy Israel David knew that Israel shouldn't have to get punished when he was the one who did wrong,David was good so he told God not to punish Israel only to punish himself.David could have left the people to suffer but he was good even though he did wrong sometimes.

fighting with my computer yesterday- had great comments re: making a sacrifice that doesn't cost anything. Wondered what a sacrifice of praise actually looks like (eg. laying down pride (worrying about what otherse think of me) during worship, time given to work in the nursery when I'd rather be in church (write me in, Jen), and there was another thing that had significant personal cost too, but I can't think of it now. When I look at what cost Jesus paid as a sacrifice, my efforts seem do-able but not insignificant to Him. Sacrifice must have a cost to be valuable.

Chris, your comment brought a song to mind; thought I would share it with you;

"More beautiful to you than the songs of angels and gifts of kings

more beautiful to you are what empty hands can bring and what desperate tongues can sing

and when broken hearts cling to you..."

love that song! Love the heart behind your words.
