Jeremiah 42

"Then they said to Jeremiah, "May the Lord your God be a faithful witness against us if we refuse to obey whatever he tells us to do! Whether we like it or not, we will obey the Lord our God to whom we are sending you with our plea. For if we obey him, everything will turn out well for us." (v 5-6).

"Johanan and his associates spoke their own curse; Jeremiah merely elaborated on it. It was a tragic mistake to ask for God's guidance with no intention of following it. Be sure never to ask God for something that you know in your heart you really do not want. It is better not to pray than to pray hypocritically. God cannot be deceived."

That was the same verse that stood out to me. So sad that they didn't mean it. May I say it and mean it.

There is no uncertainty in either Johanan's promise to obey, or in God's instructions to stay out of Egypt. I peeked ahead and read 43 too, since I feared it would show the folly of an oath taken in haste.

They had some gall, hey? Here their people are severely depleted, merely a remnant left, and they wait for 10 days for Jeremiah to get word from the Lord. What happens during those 10 days? How can they sound so intent on obeying and then turn on their heels and take lightly the HUGE consequences of entering Egypt? Yikes. Here's one example of where I'd like to learn from someone ELSE's mistakes instead of making the same one myself! (The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom) :)
