Intro:

"Tolerance. A prized virtue today. The ability to be understanding of those with whom you differ is a sign of sophistication. Jesus, too, was a champion of tolerance.

Tolerant of the disciples when they doubted. Tolerant of the crowds when they misunderstood. Tolerant of us when we fall.

But there is one area where Jesus was intolerant. There was one are where he was unindulgent and dogmatic. Were he to share his opinion today, he would be accused of being narrow, biased, one sided ,even bigoted.

But as far as he was concerned, when it comes to salvation, there aren't several roads. There is only one road. There aren't several ways... there is only one way. There aren't several paths... there is only one path. And that path is through Him.

There are times to be tolerant. And there are times to take a stand for the truth. In this letter, John takes a stand.

I found this chapter very applicable for our day and age. The prevalent relativism of our day would convince people that wrong is not neccesarily wrong, sin is not neccessarily sin. John reveals the heart of the gospel:

"If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves... but if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done. If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar and we do not accept God's teaching."

We're all sinners. We all sin. The question is, do we own our sin. There are a LOT of people out there who are living in blatant sin and refuse to admit that it is sin.

I also loved the very first part and how it talked about the Logos "the Word". I love how the word Logos is used both for Christ and for the scriptures. It's like the scriptures are a personification of Christ.

v end of 5-7 "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live in truth. But if we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus , his son, purifies us from all."

Last night I was doing part of a bible study which spoke of how often Jesus invites us to walk with him...always....24/7...365 days of the year. Amazing that we receive over and over this invitation to fellowship with him. He is always available even though we often stray off on our own course....but his path is light, truth, it is filled with the blessing of his fellowship. Not free of trials but full of his abundant strength to take us through the trials.
