a good lesson on sobriety. the amplified bible outlines that the wedding feast was a drinking fest, which makes sense when you question how Jacob could spend the night with another woman not realizing it is not his beloved. Really? Why would we be so inclined to drink so much to lose our faculties and do stupid things we have no sense of or memory of?

Why get drunk? Why the need to reach a state of numbness? Why want to celebrate a monumental and beautiful and cherishable moment in your life by getting drunk? What are the underlying issues behind drunkenness? Those are the questions that really matter. To enjoy a drink without excess is a discipline that we should learn to exercise or we should refrain.

psalm 54 "I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, O Lord, for it is good."

voluntary. not because it's expected, not because it's routine, not because it's right. But because it's heartfelt. so often I go through the motions... trying to do what I know is right just because I know it's right, but forgetting that God just wants my heartfelt engagement, not my discipline. He just wants me to delight in His goodness. for my good, and for His glory.

ruth 4, notes on Ruth... "live in faithfulness to God, knowing that the significance of your life will extend beyond your lifetime."

such words to live by. what I do today will affect my kids future, which will affect their kids future, ad infinitum.
